-SRO Community Engagement

**Attention All Lee County Residents**

At Grace Christian School, our top priorities include the safety of your children, our staff & volunteers.  Due to recent violent school events across our country as well as a preventative security measure, on May 16th, 2018, the leadership team at Grace Christian School made an official written request for a Full Time Permanent School Resource Officer (SRO) to be assigned to our school and funded through the county budget.  (See the request at the conclusion of this document.)  The estimated cost including benefits and salary would be approximately $50,000 per year.  A School Resource Officer is a Deputy Sheriff of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office who would be assigned to our school during school hours and events.

Our request was made to the Lee County Sheriff, Tracy Carter, Lee County Board of Commissioners: Amy Dalrymple, Tim Sloan, Cameron Sharpe, Robert Reives, Kevin Dodson, Dr. Andre Knecht and Larry “Doc” Oldham as well as County Manager: John Crumpton, who reports and represents the Lee County Commissioners.

As of now, the only county leader to respond to our request is Sheriff Carter.  He indicated and it was reported in THE SANFORD HERALD that he had made a request to provide additional SRO’s to our school, as well as others in our county.  The Board of Commissioners, through County Manager Crumtpon, denied that request for the current fiscal year.  However, the budget planning is in process now for the next fiscal year, beginning on July 1st, and our leaders must prioritize the safety of our children and include the Sheriff’s request in the 2018-19 budget!  To date, none of the Commissioners or the County Manager have replied to our request.

As a Lee County Tax Payer, YOU CAN HELP!

Lee County Residents can support this request by Sharing & Commenting on Social Media Posts, Calling, Emailing, Texting, Writing to our County Leaders as well as Participating in Internet Polls in order to express your support of keeping our children safe.

Here is our message.  “SUPPORT THE SAFETY OF OUR KIDS AND SUPPORT OUR NEED FOR A SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER.”

In addition, we encourage you to request to attend and address the Commissioners at their upcoming meeting on June 4th, 2018.  Here is the link to make a request to address the Lee County Board of Commissioners:

The budget in 2017-18 for Lee County was $71,072,470.  To save children’s lives, our school is simply asking for 0.07% of the overall budget, that is LESS THAN 1/10TH OF 1%.  Common Sense?  We think so!  Make your voice heard!  As a school, we will continue our efforts, but can only be successful with your help!  This issue should not be a political issue and should not require us to engage our community in this manner.  A request for a SRO is a common sense, preventative measure that the children of Lee County should be provided.  Unfortunately, we live in an environment where SROs are now considered a basic security measure.  Regardless of the school each child attends, whether Public or Private, basic safety and security measures are essential and is the first responsibility of government to the Tax Paying Citizens in Lee County.  We invite all Lee County Residents to voice their support in a polite, professional and passionate manner.

Make the calls, send the emails and write the letters while joining us in prayer for the safety of our children, the leaders who can make this happen & for all of the schools in this great county and across America!

Re:  Request for School Resource Officer

Dear County Leaders,

Grace Christian School has been a part of Lee County since 1970.  Currently, our campus educates and cares for 659 children every day.  These children are those children of your tax paying constituents from all over Lee County and this letter is a respectful and urgent request on their behalf.

Over the past several years, there has been an increase in school violence, in particular, school shootings.  I am sure you are aware; hundreds of children have been injured and killed in our schools all across America, in communities large and small.  While the debate over the reasons of why such horrific acts are committed, nevertheless, the real safety of our children is left to us as parents, educators and community leaders.

We urgently request a Full Time Permanent School Resource Officer, employed through the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, be assigned to our school and funded through the county budget.  As elected representatives of the people of Lee County, and to insure the safety of our children, please honor this request and keep our children safe.

Our goal is to collaborate with you to make our community a safer place to live.  The value our leaders place on our children and their safety is paramount to the success, sustainability and survival of this community.  Therefore, we encourage further discussion and training of leaders, parents, teachers and students and make our facilities available to facilitate such events that allow us to work together to make our community a safe place.

As we review the Lee County website, www.leecountync.gov, our Motto reads, “Committed Today for a Better Tomorrow.”  We also see our #1 Core Value,   “We Value Our Citizens, Community, Family.”   We are sure you would agree that the commitment to the safety of our Children is our Top Priority in achieving both our motto and our core values.

We anticipate that this urgent request will be approved quickly and are willing to complete the necessary tasks, as a school, to implement the newly appointed School Resource Officer.

On behalf of the parents and students of Grace Christian School, thank you for caring about the safety of our children and for serving the people of Lee County.

Sincerely,

Stuart Shumway
